Casa de la Niñez
About the institution
Casa de la Niñez is part of Fundación Patronato Municipal San José (founded in 2001 by the Municipality of Quito).
Its main objective is to guarantee the immediate restitution of the rights for working children and teenagers with regards to education, health, recreation, rest, living with a family and social security; with processes focused on the progressive eradication of child labor.
Their fields of work involve working children and teenagers and their families, institutions and the general community. They have an integral system which involves preventive services, therapeutic modalities and recreation activities. In general, the social workers accompany, in and educational way, children and teens in their places where they work, in their homes and during their studies. They also offer children and teens daily food and hygiene, help with the affiliation to Health Insurance and the best opportunity to develop their skills through various games located at the “Ludoteca”. There are also activities oriented to reinsert children at school and social and psychological support for them and their families.
Description of the work
There are various fields in which the volunteer can participate depending on his/her interests, abilities and experience.
- Volunteers can help during the process of approaching children and teenagers in the streets after an accorded planning to invite them to Casa de la Niñez by certain techniques of communication: this process also involves accompanying them at their places of work in order to make them feel secure and protected.
- Volunteers will be of great help too if they can assist children and teenagers with their homework, specially with the English language.
- There are many meetings and reunions within various fields in which the volunteer can participate and offer support.
- In addition, volunteers can help at the “Ludoteca”, helping children play in the different areas (climb wall, football court, little river for toy boats, child-sized house, etc.)
- Help is also needed in the administrative area (coordination with other organizations, development of projects, translations, etc)
